the sun is birthed from skyscrapers
bringing about a messiah of color,
blazon orange, crimson yellow
creating décor on the floor of city parks.
time transcends—heat soaks itself into sidewalks,
concrete scolds the soles of my feet and
visits to beaches become the bane
of my existence, sand
clenches to skin and saltwater floods
the insides of my eyes.
the birth of education, beckons
a return to school halls—which
reminds me of the leaves,
which start as green,
molding into orange and brown,
hanging on with frail stems,
they decompose in the soil,
that feed the structures of
bark and branches.
